Basically, the overall band score for IELTS is 9.which means that a candidate is assessed from 9 marks. And especially for a student aspiring to studies in Canadian universities is only eligible if he/she passes with 6 bands from each module. Also, there is a basic mathematics rule for IELTS, that is, the round off rule. It means that if you are having 7.1 bands overall, then you will be given 7 bands in total. And if you are having 6.85 or above it then obviously you will be awarded, 7 bands. This is the most basic rule. This rule is also called the nearest rule.

Moreover, the final IELTS band score is the average of the scores an individual hits in each of the four modules. This means that, if you are having;

8+7.5+7+7.5 = 7.5

So, the overall band score is the average of the score obtained from each module.
